Gallup Field Coal
September 12, 2016
With a history of coal mining dating back to the 1880’s, the Greater Gallup area is still going strong in the energy industry. Despite over a 100 years of mining, the region still has development potential in a variety of locations, including the Crevasse Canyon Formation in the Gallup field.
While some sections of the Gallup field have been mined out, the remaining coal has some of the best quality characteristics of any coal found in the San Juan Basin. Coal rich sections generally contain multiple seams with coal quality and thickness averaging 4.5 feet.
