The Cabinet Secretary of the Economic Development Department will also come to Gallup to make a speech and visit with several companies. ”
- Patty Lundstrom, CEcD Executive Director, Greater Gallup
Now in its sixth year, National Economic Development Week was created by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), the largest professional membership organization for economic developers, in 2016 to recognize the unique role that economic development has in creating vibrant communities with strong economies. Over the span of five years, more than 450 campaigns have been created throughout the United States and Canada, creating millions of impressions, hundreds of news stories, blog entries, videos, events and other activities. Cities, counties and states recognized the week in past years through official proclamations, local community events, and informational campaigns online and through social media. The United States Economic Development Administration (EDA) has also issued a statement commemorating Economic Development Week.
Beginning May 8th , GGEDC and its community partners will run daily articles in the Gallup Independent addressing how COVID-19 impacted their economic development activities and will highlight specific projects and activities the organizations are undertaking as we move into recovery from the pandemic.
Participating community partners this year are: GGEDC, the Northwest NM Council of Governments, the Gallup Business Improvement District (BID), UNM-Gallup Small Business Development Center, the Gallup-McKinley Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Gallup Tourism and Marketing Department.
"Economic Development Week continues to grow in importance locally and nationally because it allows economic development practitioners to share their communities' unique stories and highlight how they create and retain jobs in their communities. GGEDC has played a critical role in helping to attract and retain businesses and to train an industrial workforce in Gallup. At the end of the day, lives in Gallup and McKinley County are enhanced as a result of economic development."
– Louie Bonaguidi, Mayor of the City of Gallup. The Mayor also serves as an ExOficio member of GGEDC’s Board of Directors.
