Carbon Coal Road designated a public road by McKinley County Commission

Primary road for Gallup Energy Logistics Park to be eligible for public funding

 

Gallup, NM – Gallup Land Partners, LLC announced today Carbon Coal Road which will serve as the primary transportation corridor for the Gallup Energy Logistics Park was approved for public road status from the McKinley County Board of Commissioners.

 

Carbon Coal Road, north of the city of Gallup will connect the Gallup Energy Logistics Park to US Hwy 491, allowing traffic to bypass the city of Gallup. “Carbon Coal Road will support the Gallup Energy Logistics Park and drive economic growth in McKinley County,” said Gallup Land Partners Business Manager Aaron Kowalski. “We are grateful for the support of the Commission.”

 

The Board of Commissioners for McKinley County voted Tuesday to accept a road development agreement for Carbon Coal Road by approving a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gallup Land Partners, LLC. The motion to approve the MOU was made by Commissioner Tony Tanner after stating Gallup Land Partners has worked well with their surrounding neighbors.

 

“Designation of public road status for Carbon Coal Road will allow Greater Gallup EDC to pursue federal and state transportation funding to complete road improvements,” said Greater Gallup EDC Executive Director Patty Lundstrom. “Improvements on Carbon Coal Road are part of an ongoing effort to enhance the local and regional transportation infrastructure in McKinley County in support of economic development opportunities associated with energy development in the San Juan Basin.”

 

In August, the NM Department of Transportation broke ground on the much-anticipated $80M US Hwy 491 widening project, which doubles the highway width from two to four lanes along the remaining 29-miles from Twin Lakes to Nashchitti. US Hwy 491 links the Gallup Energy Logistics Park and McKinley and San Juan County to the San Juan Energy Basin.

 

“Transportation is a proven economic driver and today’s announcement will help Gallup Land Partners create more jobs,” said Gallup Mayor Jackie McKinney. “Ensuring that these facilities and assets are ready to meet consumer demand is vital to keeping our city, county, and state competitive.”

 

Recently, Gallup Land Partners announced a new $40M crude oil transload facility to be constructed in the Gallup Energy Logistics Center, located 5 miles northwest of Gallup in McKinley County. The state-of-the-art facility offers a unique, long-term and economical takeaway opportunity for crude oil production in the San Juan Basin. 

 

The Gallup Energy Logistics Park is a 2000-acre master-planned business park; the first and only such facility in New Mexico to anchor an Energy Logistics Park on the BNSF Railway TransCon line.
