Agriculture holds an important position in the economy of McKinley County, NM. Navigating the Changing Landscape: Trends Reshaping Agriculture's Future
An American farmer feeds more than 166 people, up dramatically from 25 people over 50 years ago. Agriculture is a growing component of McKinley County’s economy through farming, value-added agriculture and food processing facilities. The last USDA Census of Agriculture from 2022 reports nearly 1,700 farms in McKinley County at an average of 1,455 acres. The primary crops were vegetables, melons, potatoes, and sweet potatoes, while the leading livestock were cattle and sheep.
Today, agriculture is experiencing a significant transformation driven by various trends shaping the industry's future. Food Business News notes several trends driving change in food and agriculture production. These include technological advancements, such as precision farming techniques and data analytics, to optimize crop yields and resource efficiency.

New Mexico Department of Agriculture Assistance
The New Mexico Department of Agriculture has a long list of assistance programs. Two of the most unique include:
- The Healthy Soil Program provides grants to fund on-the-ground projects that address soil health-related resource concerns. The application period closes March 19 at noon for projects starting on or after July 15 and ending no later than September 30, 2026.
- The Agricultural Workforce Development Program seeks to create opportunities for young and beginning farmers/ranchers to gain agricultural work experience by incentivizing agricultural businesses to hire interns. Applications will be accepted until funds are fully allocated or by March 31, 2025, whichever comes first.
