Gallup, NM: The Southwest's Next Great Outdoor and Cultural Destination
September 11, 2025
Adventure, culture, and opportunity converge for a unique experience
Gallup, New Mexico, is rapidly earning recognition as a rising star in the American Southwest. Stunning landscapes, deep cultural roots, and an emerging outdoor economy combine to create something truly unique.
Through strategic collaboration between the City of Gallup, the Navajo Nation, and the Greater Gallup Economic Development Corporation (GGEDC), the region is making intentional investments in outdoor recreation, tourism, and small business development. These partnerships are helping transform Gallup from a renowned stop on Route 66 into a place to stay, explore, and invest.
Hidden gem with a world-class backdrop
Gallup offers a quality of place that rivals higher-profile destinations without the crowds. “You can hike for miles on world-class trails without bumping into another person, ride ATVs across lava fields, or bike through open desert trails with red rock cliffs towering above you,” said Matt Robinson, Tourism & Marketing Manager with the City of Gallup. “The challenge we embrace is seeking growth without losing our current charm.”
The regional landscape features remarkably diverse attributes.
- High desert terrain
- Deep pine forests just minutes away
- Striking lava rock and sandstone formations to the north
- Over 100 miles of developed trails, with limitless off-trail exploration opportunities
- Extensive opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and off-roading
Gallup blends this raw natural access with the charm of a small, culturally rich community. City leadership is committed to maintaining that balance while welcoming thoughtful growth.
Bridge Between Culture and Commerce
The Diné name (Na'nízhoozhí) for Gallup translates as “The Bridge,” which reflects the city’s historical role as a transportation and cultural connection point between the Navajo Nation, the rest of New Mexico, and the United States. That identity is more relevant than ever, as Gallup seeks to build bridges between:
- Native American craftsmanship and entrepreneurship and modern retail and hospitality
- Cultural events and tourism
- Outdoor recreation and small business development
Outdoor recreation meets economic growth
Gallup is transforming its outdoor assets into key economic drivers. The city is enhancing recreational infrastructure and building a business ecosystem to support entrepreneurs through education, funding access, and hands-on assistance. The City of Gallup is focused on attracting:
- Outdoor-focused entrepreneurs
- Small-scale manufacturers
- Tourism-based businesses
- Guiding services and outfitters
- Hospitality and lodging ventures
There is strong local support for these efforts, as entrepreneurs and investors will find resources and guidance to help launch outdoor-related businesses and services. “Gallup is ready to roll out the red carpet with white glove treatment,” said Robinson. “There is a lot of support for getting small-scale manufacturing and other businesses related to the outdoors off the ground.”
One example is the New Mexico Outdoor Economics Conference, hosted by Gallup for the first time this September. The major statewide event convenes business leaders, policymakers, nonprofit organizations, and outdoor advocates to discuss the future of New Mexico’s outdoor economy.
Hub for adventure and culture
Gallup is the ideal base for Southwest exploration. Visitors enjoy local restaurants, shops, a world-class flea market, and lodging. Then, following a hub-and-spoke tourism model, they venture out for day trips to nearby landmarks and recreation sites throughout McKinley County and the region.
Visit Gallup promotes this model to showcase Gallup’s value as a central destination, offering:
- Unique local cuisine and accommodations
- Access to iconic regional attractions like Canyon de Chelly and Chaco Canyon
- Historic trading posts, with 18 located in Gallup.
- One-of-a-kind artisan shops, jewelers, and craftspeople
Other unique amenities make Gallup a year-round destination. In December, the 44th Annual Red Rock Balloon Rally marks an event that has become integral to the local culture. The event is the second largest in the country, after the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
Gallup has long been a highlight of Route 66, the Mother Road that connected communities across the nation. The city continues to honor that legacy by encouraging local businesses to incorporate Route 66 themes into their branding and storefronts. Events like the Freedom Ride, Flight & Cruise this past summer, help strengthen Gallup’s identity as a modern destination, especially in preparation for the Route 66 Centennial celebration next year.
